Use Case: Lean Thinking Training at Vereinigte Lohnsteuerhilfe e.V. (VLH)

Unternehmensgebäude der Vereinigten Lohnsteuerhilfe e. V. (VLH)

Initial situation

With around 3,000 tax advisory offices and more than 1.2 million members, Vereinigte Lohnsteuerhilfe e.V. (VLH) is one of Germany’s largest income tax assistance associations.

Delivering excellent service to its members requires customer-focused, efficient processes across both its external and internal operations, along with seamless collaboration between the two.

The objective was therefore to establish Lean Thinking as a sustainable mindset and way of working throughout the organization.

The initiative began with a joint in-house training program for division, department, and team managers. Working in three cross-functional groups, participants spent three days each learning the principles and methods of Lean Thinking

A hands-on Lean simulation demonstrated the impact of streamlined processes and helped establish a shared understanding of the approach’s potential.

The insights gained were then directly applied to an initial pilot process: the onboarding of new tax advisory offices.

In parallel, the executive board developed leadership guidelines to ensure that Lean Thinking would become firmly embedded in the organization over the long term.

Success

  • Established a shared understanding of Lean Thinking across all management levels.
  • Identified significant opportunities to improve efficiency within the organization.
  • Developed numerous concrete ideas for optimizing existing processes.
  • Generated strong motivation to gradually implement Lean Thinking throughout the entire organization.
